Custom natural stone fireplace cladding

Measuring, cutting and installation in Saarland, Luxembourg and the Greater Region

FliesWerk manufactures and installs fireplace cladding made of natural stone to measure – from laser measurement to cutting in our own workshop to installation. From Nalbach, we work throughout Saarland, in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, for private builders, architects, and commercial clients. Stove, fireplace insert, flue pipe, and chimney are not included – those are handled by the stove and air heating installer. We coordinate with him and the chimney sweep to ensure that ventilation, safety distances, and stone format fit together.

Laser measurement and cutting in our own workshop

We take wall and chimney contours using laser measurement in the built state – including curves, niches, and angled corners. A facing shell almost always deviates by a few millimeters from the plan, and this affects the even joint at the ceiling connection.

Cutting is done in our own workshop: Here, the panel is fully supported, which prevents chipping at the edge. We process visible edges at miter, and we determine the edge processing before cutting.

Static, heat and safety distances

Two centimeters of granite weigh about 54 kg per square meter. Before installation, we check the substrate – solid wall, facing shell or frame – and then choose adhesive bed or mechanical fastening. If calculated too tightly, this shows up after the first heating periods as a crack in the joint or void under the slab.

Natural stone itself does not burn – critical are fastening and ventilation. We plan it without heat buildup behind the stone and adhere to the safety distances of the fireplace regulations.

Which natural stone is suitable for your fireplace?

Which stone is suitable depends on usage intensity and maintenance effort. The surface – polished, ground, brushed or flamed – will be determined during the sampling.

Granite and Quartzite

Both are hard and acid-resistant – our recommendation for regularly fired fireplaces as well as for heat benches and base areas. Quartzite appears lighter than granite.

Slate

Slate is matte and dark, soot marks are hardly noticeable, and it does not require impregnation. Only abrasive cleaners are not suitable for it.

Marble, Travertine, Sandstone and Shell Limestone

These stones are calcareous or porous: They require acid-free cleaners and a sealing that we apply before handover. We use them in rarely fired fireplaces, where veining and structure are decisive.

Where we use natural stone at the fireplace

Whether only the surround is covered or the stone surface runs up to the ceiling depends on the facing shell, room height, and load-bearing capacity of the substrate.

Cladding of fireplace insert and stove

The stone is placed on the existing facing shell, the visible edges are mitered around the corners.

Floor-to-ceiling fireplace wall

With panels in mega format up to 160 × 320 cm, a wall from floor to ceiling is created without horizontal joints – we lay the same format as large format tiles on the adjacent areas.

Open fireplaces and chimney corners

We intentionally make the floor area in front of the fireplace opening larger than the visible measurement, because sparks may land there.

Renovation of existing chimneys

We check on-site whether the old cladding can support the weight of the new covering or needs to be removed – and we communicate this before the quote, not during the installation.

Backlit stone wall made of onyx

Onyx is translucent – backlit, the grain is highlighted; we constructively separate the light plane and heat source.

Heat bench, base and surfaces

We try to work horizontal surfaces from a single piece as much as possible, so that no joint runs across the seating area, with beveled or rounded edge processing on the front edge.

Process of your project at FliesWerk

  1. Initial consultation and sampling – We clarify the fireplace model and room situation and compare types of stone on the sample areas in the workshop.
  2. Laser measurement on site – We measure the fireplace, wall, and connection areas in their built state.
  3. Planning and quotation – Slab layout, joint pattern, and edges are determined; you will receive a quotation with individual items.
  4. Cutting in our workshop – The elements are created according to the measurement data, visible edges at an angle.
  5. Installation and handover – We secure heat-resistant with ventilation, check joints and edges, and impregnate absorbent types of stone.

We will provide the binding date after the laser measurement.
